Gateway to the Cumberlands - 2021

This event was held in Williamsburg, KY, and has the support of the entire town. It’s truly a grassroots feel, where the Mayor, town Judge, and Head of Tourism all attend each day to see all the participants off. The Police escort out of the meeting spot is an over-the-top touch.

This event is the largest in the country and had a little over 300 Jeeps in attendance. We were able to talk to every single Jeep during the check-in process and hand out Northridge4x4 swag. Friday morning led us to the trail named “Alcatraz”, which is on the town Judge’s property. It is a winding trail that plays out in a creek bed. There are several large obstacles along the way, including a waterfall climb. Our group was 21 Jeeps deep on this level 7-8 rated trail. We made it through the day with only a couple, minor trail reminders. Once we arrived back at the departure point, we were able to enjoy dinner and share stories and pictures from the day. Unfortunately, the rain cut this short.

Saturday morning left us with rain still falling and trails muddy, so we opted for an easy trail. Several on-the-fly changes were made to keep the amount of damage to the trails at a minimum. The attendance fell sharply, as some opted to head for home early. The rain finally gave us a break just before lunch. At the conclusion of the trail on Saturday, we returned to the departure point for dinner and the completion of the event.

All in all, this was my favorite event of the year. The small town, welcoming atmosphere was absolutely awesome to experience. We made some great memories, talked to some friends (both old and new), and enjoyed the experience overall.
