Want a quick and easy upgrade for your Jeep JL/JT? How about a set of Clear LED Side Markers from Diode Dynamics?
Designed to factory spec, these replacement LED side marker lights fit just like factory and only take 15 minutes or so per side to install and at $80.00 for the pair, these are an affordable and clean looking upgrade to do.
What We Used:
Diode Dynamics Clear LED Side Markers
Not into the clear look? Diode Dynamics offer their LED Side Markers in three different combinations: Clear (#DD5068), Amber (#DD5069) and Smoke (#DD5070).
Whats in the Box?
Two lights and two push-pin type rivets.
How to install the Diode Dynamics LED Side Markers:
Start out by hosing out your wheel wells and get the dirt and road grime out of the way. Then remove the four fasteners shown in the pic.
Carefully drill out the center pin on the first rivet pin. (Dont worry, Diode includes brand new rivets for the finished install) You could use a thin center punch and push the center pin through, we just find it much easier to drill out the center pin.
And here’s why… it’s real quick and 90% of the time, when you pull the drill bit out, the rivet body comes right out with it.
Remove the two fender liner push pins (Christmas trees). You can use a screwdriver or needle nose pliers to do the job. BUT if you own a Jeep, just get yourself a trim fastener removal tool, it’ll come in handy in many places on your Jeep.
If you pull the push pins carefully, you can reuse them. If they get damaged, we do carry replacements: Fender Flare Push Pins from Crown (PN# J4007117).
Use an 8mm socket and ratchet to remove the small screw and fender washer.
Get your fingers in around the edge of the fender liner and pry it to the side. Locate the small T-30 Torx screw that holds the OE side marker light in place, use a T30 bit and remove the screw.
Use a small pick or screwdriver to lift the tab holding the pigtail together and separate the wires.
Remove the OE side marker light by sliding it forward and out.
Fish the new pigtail in through the opening in the fender flare.
Push the Diode Dynamics side marker light in against the front marker light and then slide it back into place. Make sure to engage the tabs in the back as you slide the light back.
Screw the T30 retaining screw into the back of the new Diode Dynamics side marker light.
Routing the wire:
**These pics are taken from the RH side fender well**
Use a flat blade screwdriver to pry the OE wire retaining clip off the turn signal support.
Move it over closer to the side marker light and clip it onto the top horizontal edge of the turn signal support.
Plug the new marker light pigtail into the OE harness and make sure the retaining tab snaps down. We then recommend to wrap a small piece of black tape around the terminal for extra protection.
Putting it all back together:
Push the fender liner back into place, reinstall the 8mm screw and fender washer and reinstall the two push-pin (Christmas tree) plugs.
Diode Dynamics include two push-pin type rivets with the lights.
Line up the holes in the edge of the fender flare and insert the rivet pin. Then use a blunt object and push the pin in all the way.
OE Style Plastic Rivets:
The supplied push-pins style rivets work alright, but we really like the OE style plastic rivets from Crown (PN# 6506007AA).
To install the Crown plastic rivets you need a rivet tool. We use this slick little bugger from the local tool truck, it’s a Quick-Set Riveter for plastic rivets. This is another one of those tools that is handy to have in your tool box if you have a Jeep with OE fender flares.
Insert the rivet into the tool, then the rivet into the hole and squeeze the handles together. The rivet will tighten up and the remaining pin snaps right off flush. You are done! Step back, enjoy your cool new LED side markers!
