A little rough, but you get what you pay for, I guess.

First, the quality of the kit itself wasn't 5/5. The metal plate came with several scratches, some of which were deep enough to expose the bare metal underneath. The areas surround all four bolt holes for the tailgate had circular pattern scratches, likely from the provided washers. This suggests to me that I may have received someone's returned unit. I remedied the scratches by hitting them with black bedliner; so hopefully we won't see any rust issues in the long run. The metal plate itself is pretty roughly cut. That said, most of the edges of the plate are sharp/jagged to some extent. This will scratch your paint, which may just be par for the course. The plate scratched my paint. At least the spare tire keeps it out-of-sight out-of-mind, otherwise, I might go crazy. The included spacers will help avoid scratch where the tailgate bolts go. However, the rest of the metal plate, e.g. the area where the vents are, will come into contact with the body and paint of the tailgate once you reinstall and tighten the spare tire carrier. I've seen some users put some tape on the painted portion of the tailgate to avoid paint damage. I'm not sure if this will be effective. Lastly, the supplied bolts for the tailgate hinges that replace the factory ones are too long. The two bolts that are closest to the right break light come into contact with and push the tailgate panel inside the jeep. So the inner tailgate panel is not locked in all the way on one end. I am thinking of adding another washer to space it out. Also, not sure of the material of the bolts; hopefully they're stainless steel to help prevent rust. I've seen other users gripe about this too; would have been nice to see these bolts covered in black oxide or something? Overall, this thing seems to do its job, but you get what you pay for. My tailgate definitely feels more robust and reinforced. The plate itself just seems a little rough around the edges. I guess it is a Rough Country, get it?
