If the brakes don't stop your Jeep, something will!  Brake pads are a critical component of any vehicles brakiRead Moreng system. They are so important that if damaged or worn out, brake pads can contribute to serious road accidents that can potentially be fatal. This is because these parts are at the heart of the system that helps to bring a vehicle to a stop. If they don't function properly, there is a risk that your car will not stop when you need it.  We look at brake pads in detail, how they work and what you should consider when purchasing them for your vehicle.

Jeep Brake Pads

Brake pads are parts of the braking system that help bring a vehicle to a halt. They often consist of a metallic plate that has a friction material attached to it. This friction material is the one that is directly responsible for stopping your vehicle. The friction material converts the car's kinetic energy into heat energy, thus allowing the vehicle to come to a halt. The brake pad does this by clamping the rotor disk, which slows down the car.

Brake pads can be made from a variety of friction materials depending on the needs of the driver. For top-racing vehicles and high-performance automobiles, you will commonly find them using fully metallic brake pads or ceramic brake pads, which have higher performance specs and can function even under harsh braking conditions. Drivers who love to go rock crawling might also require specialized brake pads to help with the steep inclines the vehicles have to operate under. Jeep brake pads, for example, such as those in the Jeep Wrangler, can be customized for rock crawling purposes, giving the vehicle better stopping power.

How Brake Pads Work

Brake pads are typically set within the brake calipers, with two pads on each wheel. The friction side faces the disk rotor, so each brake pad is placed on the opposing side of the disc. When hydraulic pressure is applied to the brake (that is, when the driver brakes), the two calipers squeeze the pads onto the rotor. The rotor's kinetic energy dissipates, allowing the vehicle to come to a halt.

Over time, however, the pads' friction side will inevitably wear out. When this happens, the pads become less and less effective at stopping the vehicle. At some point, they may also start to make grinding sounds. This is usually the last stage of their life, and continued use beyond this point is not only dangerous but can damage the vehicle. This is because as the friction material wears out, there is the risk that the metallic surface will come into contact with the rotor disk. This is likely to cause severe damage to the disk. This is the reason why it is recommended that brake pads are changed regularly and often inspected for any signs of wear and tear.

What To Consider When Purchasing Brake Pads

Given the critical role that brake pads play in the safe operation of a vehicle, it is essential to get the brake pads right when you want to replace them. Fortunately, most vehicle manufacturers make this process easy by manufacturing brake pads for very specific models. This removes the need to guess which brake pads are suitable for your vehicle. However, for specialized usage such as off-roading and rock crawling in your Jeep Wrangler, you may need special brake pads that are not from the manufacturer. These come in all shapes and sizes, and you can choose what friction material you want to use for your aftermarket brake pads. As always, talking to a Jeep expert is a good idea if you are not sure which after-market brake pads to go for.
