Bestop Sunrider For Jeep Gladiator JT

While the weather outside might be frightful, now is the perfect time to prepare for the sunny days ahead! The easiest way to enjoy the sun in your JT is to just pop the Freedom panels out and store them in the backseat, bed of the truck or at home. This may seem like the best option until a rainstorm pops up out of no where and your panels are in the back of your Gladiator or maybe even left at home. The Bestop Sunrider top is the perfect answer to that problem. It opens in seconds, folds back out of the way when open, so you don’t have to worry about storing any panels and if that sudden rainstorm catches you off guard as it only takes seconds to close. The best thing…. this is a super quick and clean install you can do right in your own driveway or garage. The only tool needed is a T40 Torx bit and a ratchet or driver to run that bit. What’s In The Box: Header and Deck Assembly for the Bestop Sunrider for the Gladiator JT and the Wrangler JL (PN# 52452). Bracket and Hardware kit for the Gladiator JT/Wrangler JL Sunrider top by Bestop.   How To Install The Bestop Sunrider: Start out by removing your Freedom panels.     Attach the Z-clips on the sides of the deck assembly to the door rails.     Installed they sit flush in against the door rails.     Align the mounting holes in the door rails to the sides of the Sunrider deck assembly.  ...

Warn JL/JT Elite Winch Bumper Install

How do you know when it’s time to install a winch and winch bumper on your Jeep? Seriously? You have a Jeep, of course you’re going to put a winch and winch bumper on the front of it and the sooner the better! Most times, its not when you’re going to put one on, it’s which one you’re going to install. With the huge selection of winch bumpers out there, it can sometimes be daunting to chose one. But we decided to make the choice easy, we knew we were going to install a Warn Zeon 10-S, so why not install a matching Warn Elite Front Winch Bumper while we’re at it? Warn has been building winches and winch bumpers for decades and with the recent departure of Superwinch, they are the only high end consumer winch company left. A few months back we did a tour of the Warn factory in Clackamas, OR. That really wetted our appetite to install a few more products from Warn Industries. The Elite series comes in four flavors, the Full Width Elite bumper and the Stubby Elite bumper and then with or without the hoop. They all mount up the same, so it doesn’t matter which one you choose, the mounting is the same. So follow along as we show you the How-To DIY on the Warn Elite bumpers. What We Used: Warn Elite Series Full Width Front Bumper with Tube. Warn Zeon 10-S Winch, 10,000 lbs w/ synthetic line. Removing Factory JL/JT Rubicon Plastic Front Bumper: Start by removing the top side trim piece between the bumper and grille. It is held in place wit...

Rugged Ridge Spartacus HD Tire Carrier Install Guide

The rear tailgate hinges on the Wrangler JLs are leaps and bounds better than the older JK model. That said, they still aren’t designed to handle added weight and JL owners can start seeing worn out hinges and bent tailgates as a result of carrying a full-size 37″ or bigger spare tire. To help combat the problem, Rugged Ridge developed the Spartacus HD Tailgate Hinge Assembly and the Spartacus HD Tire Carrier for the 2018+ Wrangler JL. The Tailgate Hinge Assembly is a cast unit that has burly hinges designed to handle the weight of larger spare tires. The HD Tire Carrier is a fabricated welded steel assembly that bolts up to the HD Tailgate Hinge Assembly, replacing the OE plastic tire carrier. Our test mule for today’s install is the 2018 JLU Sahara that belongs to Meg, Northridge4x4’s Customer Service manager. You’ve seen her black Sahara on Northridge Nation before, this is one more step closer to her goal of building a mild, yet capable trail and exploration Wrangler JLU for the family. What’s In The Box? Rugged Ridge HD JL Tailgate Hinge Assembly  Rugged Ridge HD JL Tire Carrier   Go from this:   To this in less than an hour:   The How-To: Start out by removing the spare tire from the OE tire carrier. Amazing to see how dirty it can get behind the spare tire.   Use a plastic trim tool to pry up the edge of the inner trim panel of the tailgate and continue to work your way across the panel un...

Upgrade Your Gladiator JT with a Soft Tonneau Cover – Install How-To

The great thing about having a truck bed is the ability to carry a ton of stuff in the back of the truck…. the bad is that your gear is left out in the open to prying eyes, inclement weather, and is vulnerable to dust and debris on the trail. One of the quickest and easiest ways to protect the gear in the bed of your Gladiator is a tonneau or bed cover; out of sight, out of mind. Bed covers also keep your items more protected from the weather and trail debris. For our install, we chose to go with a genuine Mopar bed cover on our 2019 Gladiator JT, however there are other great options out there. It fits great, and so far the bed has been fairly protected from the weather. We’ll have to wait until the fall PNW rains start to see how weather protected things really are. What’s In The Box: The Mopar soft cover is a tri-fold and comes in the box already folded in threes. Mopar Soft Cover instructions and hardware kit. As you can see, not too much to it. This will be a quick and easy install. Tools Needed: Utility Knife T30, T50 Torx Bit 3mm Hex Key   The How-To: Start out by cutting out the bed rail cut-outs on the inner edge of the Gladiator bed rails. Pro Tip: We used a plastic panel tool to hold the bed rail cap out away from bed rail to keep from cutting into the paint.     Once the cut-outs are removed you can access the mounting holes for the Tail Brackets.     Install the Tail Bracke...

Adams 1350 Extreme-Duty Driveshafts for your Jeep Wrangler - Review & Install

Big lift, big tires, big wheeling trips…. you’ve now embraced Jeep life in a BIG way and you are also starting to find parts that are not holding up to all this BIG action. Driveshafts are one of those items that take a lot of abuse, especially if you are running a tall lift. The driveshafts in the Jeep JL, like the previous model JK, use CVs at both ends on the rear driveshaft and at the transfer case end of the front driveshaft. They are a wear item and a weak point in your Jeep’s drivetrain. As you start to lift a Jeep, the CVs are operating at a steeper angle, which will cause the rubber boot to tear, allow water and debris in, causing wear, then vibrations and ultimately failure. In the JKs, it was lifts taller than 3″s and 50-70,000 miles before it started happening. For the JL, typically driveshafts start to become a requirement at or past a 3.5" lift or if your shocks extend longer than 28". However, its never a bad idea to upgrade to heavy-duty driveshafts even if you're running less than 3.5" of lift! The CVs in the Wrangler JLs and JT's have a new, slightly larger CV, but they are still just a simple CV with a rubber boot, which will see the same problems as the older JK CVs. The CV on the left is from a JL with 15K miles on it. The JK CV on the right was ran with a lift and had around 80K miles on it. The boot was severely thrashed, the CV was packed with dirt and it had worn out enough to cause a serious vibration while driving down the r...

S&B Filters Cold Air Kit For JL 2.0 Turbo

S&B Filters give the 2.0 Turbos folk some love with the release of their new Cold Air Intake for the 2.0T Wrangler JL. Built to same exacting specs and high quality as their 3.6 Pentastar V-6 CAI kits. The new 2.0T Cold Air Intake kit is quick and super easy to install. You only need a few hand tools and an hour or less of your time. S&B Filters has released two versions. One with an extended-use paper filter and one with a cleanable, reusable cotton filter (pn# 75-5129). We decided to go with the oiled cotton filter for this install. The OE intake flattens out in the center, slowing down incoming air. S&B uses an oversized intake tube that is much larger through the whole run. They picked up 50% better flow than the original air intake system! Just think how much better your turbo could be breathing… *Picture courtesy of S&B filters.   What’s In The Box? Tools Needed: Flat Blade Screwdriver 8mm, 10mm Socket Ratchet Extension 10mm Wrench 5/8″, 3/4″ wrench HD Diagonal Cutters   Removing The Stock 2.0T Air Intake Assembly: Lets first take a look at the anatomy of the stock Wrangler JL 2.0T Air Intake Assembly.     Remove the Christmas tree plug holding the wire harness for the IAT (Intake Air Temp) sensor. You can use a screwdriver or needle nose pliers or a specialty trim tool to pull the clip free.     Remove the IAT sensor from the factory intake tube. Twist the sensor counter-cl...

A Look Back at The 2012 Jeep JK Arctic Edition

Take a Jeep Wrangler Sahara, add on some custom Arctic badges and Yeti footprint decals on it and what do you get? The Jeep Wrangler Arctic edition, an appearance package that was offered only in 2012. Available in Bright White, Winter Chill, or Bright Silver paint only and decked out with black painted Rubicon wheels and tires, this special edition was an appearance option that added $3,000.00 to the price of the Jeep. The 2012 Wrangler Arctic Edition premiere.   Yeti Badges, Decals and more: When you think of the Arctic and snow you always end up thinking the Yeti. For the Arctic edition, Jeep paid homage to that big white hairy critter with custom badges and footprint decals on this special edition. This super cool “Yeti” Arctic Badge adorned the front quarter fenders.     On the hood and front fender flares you’ll find Yeti footprints.     The front seats in the Wrangler Arctic edition even got the Yeti styling with the Arctic Badge stitched in. Along with the badges, the front seats were also equipped with seat heaters to help warm your tush on those cold winter mornings. Covered in black Tectonic fabric with Polar White accents and Orange stitching, these seats were pretty sharp looking.     The well appointed Arctic edition interior had the orange accent stitching throughout, including the steering wheel, armrests and console lid. The door t...

Teraflex Falcon Stabilizer for Jeep JL/JT

Adding a lift and bigger tires to your Jeep can start a flurry of upgrades as each item snowballs into the next needed upgrade. One of those is upgrading the factory steering stabilizer to something designed for the added force from bigger tires. Original equipment Jeep steering stabilizers are designed for factory sized tires. When you start lifting your Jeep and going to larger than stock tires, you’ll find that the stock stabilizer is quickly overwhelmed and the shock load dampening can feel weak and loose. TeraFlex offers the Falcon Nexus EF 2.1 and the Falcon Nexus EF 2.2 Fast Adjust steering stabilizers that are a direct bolt-in for the 2019+ JL and JT. The factory JL stabilizer has bushed eyes on each end that bolt into the tie rod assembly on the RH side and the axle mounted bracket on the other side. Any replacement steering dampener needs to either have two eyes on it or an eye on the RH side and an axle mounting bracket on the LH side, which is what the TeraFlex Falcon JL steering stabilizer has.   Removing the Stock JL Stabilizer: For both stock and aftermarket tie rods, the first step is to remove the stock stabilizer. The stock JL stabilizer is held in with four (4) bolts. Three bolts securing it to the axle side and one bolt over on the tie rod assembly.     Use an 18mm socket to loosen the nut at the tie rod end of the stabilizer. Then use a 18mm wrench on top to hold the bolt while you ratchet o...

Upgrade Your JL/JT with a Rugged Ridge Multi-Mount System

The Rugged Ridge Multi-mount system for the 2018+ Wrangler JL is designed to help you keep your electronics at hand in a handy location on your dash. The most obvious use is to hold your phone. We found that it can also be used for smaller hand-held type GPS units and for small sport cameras like a GoPro. Follow along, this is an easy, quick and inexpensive mod for your Jeep. What we used: Rugged Ridge JL Dash Multi-Mount system  What is in the Box: Tools Needed: A Phillips screwdriver That’s it, nothing more… Ease of Installation: Two screws, we told you it was an easy install! The How-To: Peel out the OE rubber liner in the JL dash pocket.     Use the Phillips screwdriver to remove the two screws in the dash pocket.     Set the Rugged Ridge Dash Multi-Mount into the dash pocket.     Push it down into the pocket.     Reinstall the two dash screws in through the holes in the Rugged Ridged multi-mount and tighten.     The retaining nut holds the phone holder onto the ball mount.     Push the retaining nut over the ball mount.     Push the phone mount onto the ball mount. It should snap into place.     Slide the retaining nut up and screw onto the phone mount.     That’s it, told you this one was simple…. You can adjust the phone mount to have your phone vertical, horizontal or anywhere in between...

Currie Digital EZ Deflator Review and How-To

The Currie EZ Deflator with an analog (mechanical gauge) has been around for many years and has been the go-to cool gadget for deflating tires when on the trail. They are quick and easy to use, very reliable and after many years on the market, Currie has decided to update them with a digital gauge. Enter the Currie Digital EZ Deflator Pro (PN#CE-9029PRO) It is second generation to the original EZ Deflator we’ve all come to know and seen used for years. Two major upgrades to the Currie EZ Deflator from the first gen to the second gen. Currie EZ Deflator Improvements: #1) The Valve Core Chamber is longer, allowing the EZ Deflator to fit beadlock wheels with tall rings. #2) They are equipped with a digital gauge for easy read-out. Digital is Less Expensive: The cool thing about today’s digital world…. adding the digital gauge actually dropped the price by a few dollars. That’s right you can now get the new Currie Digital EZ Deflator for less money than the older style deflator with the mechanical gauge. The benefits to the new digital gauge: Backlight – Makes airing down in the dark easy. Tougher – The digital gauge can take more abuse than the mechanical gauge. Being digital, does it have a hard to find, hard to replace battery? That’s a big negatory. The digital gauge is powered by two AAA batteries accessed through the back. That’s right two AAA batteries, super common and inexpensive. So you may be a...

JL/JT Clear LED Side Marker Upgrade

Want a quick and easy upgrade for your Jeep JL/JT? How about a set of Clear LED Side Markers from Diode Dynamics? Designed to factory spec, these replacement LED side marker lights fit just like factory and only take 15 minutes or so per side to install and at $80.00 for the pair, these are an affordable and clean looking upgrade to do. What We Used: Diode Dynamics Clear LED Side Markers Not into the clear look? Diode Dynamics offer their LED Side Markers in three different combinations: Clear (#DD5068), Amber (#DD5069) and Smoke (#DD5070).   Whats in the Box? Two lights and two push-pin type rivets.   How to install the Diode Dynamics LED Side Markers: Start out by hosing out your wheel wells and get the dirt and road grime out of the way. Then remove the four fasteners shown in the pic.     Carefully drill out the center pin on the first rivet pin. (Dont worry, Diode includes brand new rivets for the finished install) You could use a thin center punch and push the center pin through, we just find it much easier to drill out the center pin.     And here’s why… it’s real quick and 90% of the time, when you pull the drill bit out, the rivet body comes right out with it.     Remove the two fender liner push pins (Christmas trees). You can use a screwdriver or needle nose pliers to do the job. BUT if you own a Jeep, just get yourself a trim fastener removal tool, it’ll co...

TeraFlex Delta Brake Kit for JL/JT & JK

STOP Your Jeep Now! It’s the same old story…. Get a Jeep, lift it, put bigger tires on it, outfit it with a bunch of bumpers, armor and gear and then get it out on the road and you soon find that the stock brakes just don’t cut it when it comes to bringing a built Jeep to a stop. You aren’t going to take gear off or go to a smaller tire….So what do you do? You are going to take a hard look at the new TeraFlex Delta Brake kit for the JL/JT & JK and the TeraFlex Delta Brake kit with J8 booster kit for the JK. Billed as the ultimate upgrade brake package for your JL or JK, the Delta Brake kit is designed for Jeeps with bigger tires and/or are heavily loaded, like a Jeep built for serious Overlanding. The TeraFlex Delta Brake kit comes with four replacement high performance rotors, four replacement calipers with a high-modulus bridge and all the hardware you need to install them. No welding or adapters are needed to install this badass brake kit. The only mods needed is some slight trimming of the OE brake backing plates. What is a High-Modulus Bridge? The high modulus designation refers to the stiffness of the 4140 forged chromoly steel center that “bridges” the distance between the aerospace grade T6 6061 forged aluminum piston housings. Flex is a huge problem with brake calipers, they are basically a hydraulic clamp with brake pressures ranging from 500 to over 2,000 psi! As you apply the brakes, the brake piston clamps the brake rotor to slow the...

Rugged Ridge Floor Liners to Protect Your Jeep - Install Guide

It’s a Jeep, it’s going to get dirty and get dirt, mud and muck drug into it, it’s just going to happen! The best thing you can do is add a good set of floor liners to protect that carpet from the wear and tear of daily use and the dirt that comes with it. We installed a set of Rugged Ridge’s JL Floor Liners into Malo’s 2018 Sting Gray JLU Rubicon to see how well everything fits and to check out the quality. Read on and see if the Rugged Ridge JL Floor Liners are a part you need to get. What we used: Rugged Ridge JL 4dr Floor Liner Kit   Installing the Rugged Ridge JL Floor Liner kit: First thing you gotta do is to remove the wimpy stock floor mats. The second thing you need to do is to vacuum up all the dirt and debris. Leaving it in place will trap it there, where it will act like loose sandpaper between the OE carpet and the new floor mats, causing abrasion to your stock carpets. Plus it’s easy to do, so why not?     Slide the new floor liner into place and press down the locks onto the OE nubs sticking up.     Repeat on the driver’s side, pull the floor mat, vacuum it out and then slide the Rugged Ridge Liner into place.     The locking slots in the Rugged Ridge Floor Liners match up to the OE locking nubs perfectly and lock in by pushing down on the round embossed ridge (red circle).     Once locked in place...

Warn Industries Factory Tour!

Sometimes You Just Get Lucky Back in 2019 we were headed down Interstate 5 through Washington and into Oregon, headed South towards destinations unknown, when we heard back from our friend Andy at Warn Industries…. “Hey Tim, we can squeeze in some time to give you a factory tour if you can stop in on your way south.” A millisecond later we hit the turn signal, worked our way over to the next off-ramp and headed for Clackamas, Oregon, the home of Warn Industries and where Andy Lilienthal works in the marketing department. Founded in 1948, Warn Industries is one of those granddaddy 4×4 companies, having been around since the little Willys Flat Fenders were repurposed after WWII for farm and recreation use. Warn Industries has not only seen the 4×4 market grow and evolve, they grew and evolved too, from their humble beginnings as a small family ran business to its current site in Oregon that is 180,000 sq.ft. and employing over 350 people. First step was through the Warn lobby We met up with our guide Andy, got our guest ID badges (yes, we needed badges!) and headed deeper into the factory. One of the first sights you see in the lobby at Warn is this beautiful 1948 Willys CJ-2A. It’s absolutely gorgeous and of course it has an old school Warn winch on the front.     Taking a closer look at the front of that incredible Willys, we see it is a Warn Bellevue 6,000lb. winch; the older sibling to all the Warn winches that followed. ...

Touring the ARB USA Headquarters!

While attending the 2019 ARB Drive Day training event, we had the chance to tour the ARB USA headquarters in Auburn, WA. Having been through their earlier facilities over the years, it was no surprise that this newer location is also very well laid out, organized and up-to-date. From the outside, the ARB USA headquarters are very low key. They want to keep the focus on their dealer network and their products.     This is where a large part of ARB’s USA operations are ran, just about everything from importing, exporting, marketing and sales, to technical and warranty help. We took the chance to meet new staff members we hadn’t met yet, as well as shake hands with those old friends we’ve come to know over the years.   ARB Tech and Warranty Dept: If you do have a warranty problem and need to send an ARB part back for inspection and/or repairs, this is where it happens…. the ARB tech dept. Products are torn down, inspected and repaired before being sent back to duty in the rough and tumble world of off-roading.     The tech department also is where ARB USA’s in-house engineer will test fit and help develop new products coming in from Australia. This new Ford Ranger was trying on a prototype ARB winch bumper/bull bar on the front. Unfortunately, as it was not yet a production part we couldn’t snap any pics to share with you. Take our word for it though, it was dead sexy and matched the lines of the new Ranger nicely. ...

LoD Signature Series Frame Mounted Rock Sliders - Install Guide

Rocker-ing out with LoD: One of the first mods for any rig you plan on taking off road should be a set of sliders. Sure, a lift and bigger tires are important, but you all know that no matter how high you lift it, if you are going off road, sooner or later you’re going to get into the rockers. The question is will they be protected or not? We did have the factory rock rails on our Rubicon and they protected our rockers on the few off road trips we’ve had the JL on (including a week in Moab). We also know that they do not stick very far out from the side of the body, so sooner or later we knew something was going to get past the OE rail and get into the body. We’ve been selling LoD products for a number of years, so when they released their sliders for the new JL we had to try a set out on the boss’ JLUR. We raided the warehouse and grabbed a set of the black LoD Signature Series frame mounted Rocksliders. They are also available in bare steel for those wanting to paint their own for a different color combo: Bare Steel LoD Signature Series frame mounted Rocksliders. These turned out to be quick and easy to install and if you don’t plan on beating your JL off road, there is no drilling involved, it can be a pure bolt on set-up. If you do plan on using your JL/JLU off road, we’d definitely recommend drilling out the three holes and use the extra hardware to help keep the sliders solid under your Wrangler. What comes in the...

LoD Destroyer Rock Sliders for the Jeep JL - Install Guide

Installing LoD Destroyer Rock Sliders on Wrangler JL If there is any best “First Mod” out there for the 4 door Wranglers or JT Gladiators, it should probably be rocker panel protection of some sort. That long wheelbase means there are large spans of unprotected sheetmetal between the front and rear tires and one big hit is all it takes to dent them up pretty bad. These rock sliders are also avaliable for the Jeep Gladiator! We used LoD Signature Series Rock Sliders on our Red JLU Rubicon build and it just seemed natural to try a set of the LoD Destroyer Series Rock Sliders on our Sting Gray JLU Rubicon. The Destroyer Series Rock Sliders are a box sheetmetal style side rail that has steps inset at each door. They are definitely bigger and burlier looking than the rock crawler tube style Signature Series Rock Sliders. Just like the Signature Series, The Destroyer Series Rock Sliders are frame mounted. They bolt up to existing holes in the frame and then there are three optional bolts to add to the frame. The holes are in the LoD brackets, but you will have to drill them into the frame. Though not necessary for a daily driver mall cruiser, we do highly recommend that you drill the extra holes in the frame and use the optional bolts. Even if you were to only to use your Jeep on road, the extra bolts will add extra strength. This install is a little different in that this JL has the 2.0L Turbo 4 cylinder in it and we’ll need to deal with the coolan...

Regearing the JL Wrangler - Overview

Bigger Tires Means Deeper Gears: Yukon has just released their 4.88 gears and install kits for the new M210 Front Axle and M220 Rear Axle found under the Rubicon JL and JLU. They have been working hard for the last year on bringing these gears to market. A few months back they released their 4.10 gearsets, now it’s their 4.88 gearsets and we have the perfect place to test these out. The boss’s 2018 JL Unlimited Rubicon runs 37″ Patagonia M/T tires on 17″ XD232 Beadlocks during the week for the Daily Driver duties and a set of 40″ Patagonia M/Ts on 17″ KMC Slab beadlocks for weekend adventures. For gears, it has been making do with the stock 4.10 Rubicon gears. While the JL 8 speed auto is pretty fantastic and handles the 37″s decently, when the 40″s go on, the need for steeper gears definitely becomes apparent. Wait… M210…M220 Axles…WHAT???? Now when we talk about the new M210 and M220 axles under the 2018+ JL, we are talking about the “NEW” Advantek Dana 44s from Dana-Spicer. They are new, they are stronger and they are quite a bit different from the JK D44s used in the last generation of Wranglers (2007-20018 JK/JKUs). Dana is using their metric dimensions as model designators, so the front Dana 44 Advantek has a 210mm dia. ring gear and the rear Dana 44 Advantek has a 220mm ring gear. Why You Need Deeper Gears With Larger Tires: The ring and pinion gears in your axle do two different things, one is turn the driving power 90° fro...

LoD JL Wrangler Spare Tire Riser

Giving your Spare Tire a Lift! After you’ve lifted your JL with the latest and greatest, bolted on a sweet set of 37″s and your Wrangler is looking good. … then you hit a slight problem. Your 37″ spare doesn’t fit on the back of your JL, it hits the rear bumper. Time for a LoD spare tire riser. LoD can help with their 2018+ Jeep JL Spare Tire Riser pn# LODJTC1801. Laser cut from 1/8″ steel, MIG welded and finished with black powder coat, it is designed to last the life of your Jeep. It’s also quick and easy to install, gotta love the easy ones!   What comes in the box: Tools Needed: Flat Blade Screwdriver 13mm, 14mm (or 9/16″) socket 1/2″ Socket Ratchet and extension Medium strength thread locker, we recommend Blue Loctite 248   The HOW-TO: This one is a quick and easy project, even if you take your time with a couple frosty beverages, you’ll still have time to get at those honey-dos you promised a week ago.   First step is to open the tailgate and remove the inside panel. We carefully inserted a flat blade screwdriver between the edge of the panel and pried it open enough for the clips to pop loose. We used a shop towel to help protect the paint from scratches.     Pull the inner cover from the tailgate, set aside and close the tailgate.     The green circles highlight the 8 bolts holding the OE tire carrier to the tailgate.     Use a 13mm socket to re...

Fix the ESC Warning in your JL/JT after a Lift!

The easy fix for that annoying ESC warning. So you saved up your pennies, bought a lift kit for your brand new JL, installed it yourself over the weekend with a couple friends and then hopped in to take it out for a spin. As you are out driving through the neighborhood, looking like a rock star, you notice two things. The first is that the steering wheel is off a bit from center and the second is your digital dash is lit up like a Christmas tree with the Service Electronic Stability Control warning. Yes, they are related and yes, it is easy to fix. What does ESC do? Electronic Stability Control (ESC) monitors the rotational speed of the wheels and other parameters including the steering angle. If the steering wheel is off-center and the vehicle is going in a straight direction, the computer is reading that the vehicle is turning while all four tires are spinning at the same speed (traveling in a straight line). The computer reads this as an error, thinking that the vehicle has lost traction and can reduce the engine power and/or engage the brakes to help try to regain control of the vehicle. What does this have to do with a suspension lift? As you lift the suspension, the draglink becomes effectively shorter, pulling the steering arm towards the passenger side. This in turn causing the steering wheel to turn away from center to keep the tires straight. Those pesky ESC sensors in the steering column senses that the steering wheel is no longer ce...

Pedal Commander for Your JL/JT/JK Jeep

Taking Charge with the Pedal Commander Ever since the Jeep has gone to drive-by-wire electronic pedals, they have always felt a little laggy. Sure the aerodynamics of a brick and big heavy tires play a part, but they just feel a little unresponsive. Even the new 8 speed automatic (850RE Torqueflite) makes a huge difference in JL drivability over the older 5G-Tronic auto found in the JK. But the new JL still feels a bit laggy when mashing the throttle….mash it and it will go… at some point in time. Enter the Pedal Commander Throttle Response Controller. Available for both the JK and the JL, the Pedal Commander Throttle Response Controller is the fix for the laggy pedal feel. The installation is simple and it is easy to tune for the pedal to throttle feel you want. The Pedal Commander has 4 different control modes: Eco, City, Sport and Sport+. It also offers 8 sensitivity setting for each control modes. Once you’ve selected a mode, you can then adjust for higher or lower sensitivity to dial it in to suit your driving style. Mopar JL/JT Sill Guard Install

Protecting your door sills with OE Mopar parts Sometimes it really is those little things that can bug the heck out of you. In the case of our Firecracker Red JLUR, it was the daily use and abuse taking its toll on the door sills. In a short 7,000 miles of use, the scratches at the door sills were serious, in an annoying kind of way. The MPR82215394 Sill Guards are a quick way you can help keep those sills in good condition and they come from Mopar, so you know they’ll fit your JL with no problems. So when the first set showed up here at Northridge4x4 in Silverdale, WA, we figured we’ll give them a shot on our shop JL and show you how to protect your sills while we’re at it. What do you need: Mopar JL Sill Guards pn#2215394. Ease of Install: Half a wrench on the five wrench scale. Seriously, if you can’t install these you should be driving a car. Tools Needed: A few paper towels and some 409 cleaner.   The How-To install your Mopar Sill Guards: After only 7,000 miles our JLUR, the scratches at the driver’s door sill are quite noticeable. Sure, it’s not a big deal, but they were annoying to look at.     We wiped away the dirt and grime using a couple paper towels and some 409 cleaner. Then set the guards on the sills to check placement and make sure we like where they’re going to sit.     Next up was to use the Mopar supplied alcohol wipes to go back over the sill plates, making sure they were ...

Factor55 Flatlink E Winch Shackle Mount

Tired of your winch hook clanging around on the front of your winch? Don’t like the look of your winch rope spooled out 18″ and hooked onto your recovery point? Maybe you want to install a flip-up license plate frame? Whatever your motivation, look no farther than the Factor 55 Flatlink winch shackle mounts. Designed with ease of assembly and ease of use in mind, the Factor 55 winch shackle mounts take less than five minutes to install, looks great on the front of your fairlead and give you a more secure attachment point than just a hook alone. It’s what Factor 55 refers to as Closed System Winching. For our installation we chose the Factor 55 Flatlink E (Expert) which features a large pear shaped shackle mounting hole that allows for attachment to either the pin or bow end of common D- shackles, as well as many common OEM recovery hooks. This makes the new FlatLink E more versatile than the standard FlatLink design. However, if used incorrectly it adds the possibility of a dangerous shackle side loading condition especially during momentary slack conditions. If you are more of a part-time recreational wheeler or don’t have a lot of winching experience, we recommend the standard Factor 55 Flatlink which can only accept the pin end of a D shackle and will not allow a D shackle side load pull. To top it all off, all Factor 55 Winch Line Shackle Mounts are engineered, tested and made in the U.S.A. Where to get this Product: Factor55 Flatlink E (Expert) ...

How To Change the Oil in your Jeep JL/JT with 3.6 V-6 Engine

Sooner or later you gotta do it… Change the oil in your Jeep JL/JT with the 3.6 V6 engine. The miles are racking up on your new JL and you’re starting to wonder when should you change the oil in your JL? In general, FCA USA LLC recommends that engine oil and oil filter be changed every 5,000 miles. However that can change according to usage, light duty to severe duty, you’ll have different change intervals according to lubrication and filtration needs. But how do you know when you should change your oil and oil filter? Like the later model JKs, Your JL is equipped with what the factory is calling an Automatic Oil Change Indicator System. This AOCIS is designed to give you a warning message on the instrument cluster display when it is time to change your oil. The computer examines the engine use parameters, like extreme hot or cold temps, towing, and frequent short trips, to warn you when the engine oil and filter may need to be changed. This can happen as early as 3500 miles and when the single chime and warning light does come on in your instrument cluster, FCA recommends that the oil and filter is changed within the next 500 miles. TECH NOTE: Under no circumstances should oil change intervals exceed 10,000 miles, twelve months or 350 hours of engine run time, whichever comes first. For SEVERE USE: Change the engine oil at 4,000 or 350 hours run time if the vehicle is operated in dusty and off road environment or is operated at idle or only very low...
